At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
